Fontenelle Nature Association

Fontenelle Nature Association image

The Fontenelle Nature Association can trace its roots to 1910 when a group of Nebraskan scholars and businessmen fought to preserve the lands along the Missouri River, south of Omaha. In the 1990s, it was recognized that a problem existed with regeneration of bur oaks and maintenance of bur oak savannas. The UT Tree Improvement Program offered to assist Director of Science and Stewardship, Gary Garabrandt, with oak regeneration problems and has been growing bur oak and other hardwood seedlings from eastern Nebraska seed sources at the Georgia Nursery. Genetic tests are nested within operational plantings to gain an understanding of the relationship of genetics and seedling quality with successful regeneration.
