Formal cooperation between the UT-TIP and the Tennessee Department of Agriculture, Division of Forestry's Tree Improvement Program (TDF-TIP) has existed since 1966. The TDF-TIP was founded in 1964 and serves Tennessee through establishment of genetic tests, advanced generation breeding, seed orchards, and production of seed for the East Tennessee State Nursery. The two programs work closely together to ensure coordination of research and to avoid duplication of effort. All materials and applied technologies developed by the UT-TIP automatically flow into the TDF-TIP and ultimately benefit Tennessee landowners, a process that is a source of great pride in both programs. Russell A. Cox, senior Staff Forester in Tree Improvement and Diane Warwick, Staff Forester in Tree Improvement currently lead the TDF-TIP and are stationed in Knoxville to maintain close contact with the UT-TIP.
